The Misfits Destroyed the Lives of Those Who Starred in It

Despite its star-studded cast (Montgomery Clift, Marilyn Monroe, and Clark Gable), The Misfits went on to be a commercial failure, although it now holds a 100% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. During filming, Monroe and writer Arthur Miller’s relationship deteriorated after Monroe overdosed on set. Monroe died less than a year after the film was finished. Gable died of a heart attack several days after filming ceased, the cause of which was speculated to be from the stress of making the film. Clift’s career fell apart, and five years later, he had a heart attack after refusing to watch The Misfits on television.
