IKEA Launches New Pet Products One Year After Serious Recall

Last summer, Swedish furniture retailer Ikea recalled a water-dispensing pet bowl after two dogs died tragically while using them. That product was developed in by a designer Inma Bermudéz in tandem with trained veterinarian Barbara Schäfer. This week, the company announced that it would be adding more products to the Lurvig line, of which the original water bowl was a part.

The line will see releases from October into the spring of 2020. Among them include wallet-friendly cat houses, pet carrying bags, travel bowls, and luxurious sleeping cushions. This line only includes round vessels made of plastic, stoneware, and stainless steel.

Bermudéz and Schäfer worked on the Lurvig line for its second run, too. Ikea released a statement saying their goal was to design items from a pet’s point of view.

“The biggest challenge is not to humanize pet products,” said Schäfer. “It’s really important to use animals’ natural needs and behaviors—like how they sleep, eat, or play—as starting points. Then we can design a product that fits in with our ‘human needs,’ such as style and form.”
