Joshua Bassett was asked to choose a favorite between Olivia Rodrigo and Sabrina Carpenter's songs, and to that, he responded with: "I hope people don't forget the value that Olivia and Sabrina bring to the world outside of the drama." He, of course, didn't choose a track that he preferred. Rodrigo sparked some major rumors when she dropped her song, which alluded to a messy breakup between Bassett and herself, and that made the Internet go wild for "drivers license."
The most incriminating line in Rodrigo's song, "And you're probably with that blonde girl, who always made me doubt. She's so much older than me, she's everything I'm insecure about," only further sparked rumors because the word "blonde" was initially "brunette," but Rodrigo changed it. All fingers pointed to Carpenter, and fans speculated that there had been a cheating scandal. So of course, Carpenter released her own song about a particular girl getting under her skin. Hmm...
Through all of this, Bassett has held a firm "no comment" stance when asked about the "scandal." His most recent interview revealed that he wishes people would just move on from the drama and focus on these two women as individuals and artists, which a lot of audiences probably agree with. The Internet pits women against each other too often, and it causes unnecessary stress on both parties. Can't we just acknowledge that both songs are great and move on?
