William Henry Harrison did not hold slaves in his short time in office, but he did have slaves previously. John Tyler, James Polk, and Zachary Taylor all owned slaves while they ran the country. As the abolition movement was revving up and slaves were fighting for their freedom, Andrew Johnson and Ulysses S. Grant were the last two presidents to hold slaves. Ulysses S. Grant held office from 1869 until 1877. That’s less than 200 years ago. Slavery is still very close to our time!
