FDA Warns All That Glitters Is Not Edible

The Food and Drug Administration has recently warned consumers that glitzing up your holiday baking may not be in your best interest.

Safe ingredients typically include sugar, acacia (gum arabic), maltodextrin, cornstarch, and color additives that have been approved for food use, like mica-based pearlescent pigments. Also, keep an eye out for the word “edible.” Most edible products will contain the word “edible” on the label. And remember, “non-toxic” doesn’t mean “edible.” If the ingredients aren’t listed, the FDA recommends staying away.
