The sheer budget alone for John Carter was a red flag—the film lost up to $214 million at the box offices. Why so much? The film had no notable names on the bill and was based on an obscure science fiction novel called A Princess of Mars by Edgar Rice Burroughs. Hilariously, the title was shortened from John Carter on Mars to just John Carter after the Mars Needs Moms debacle.
