14 years ago, one of the deadliest natural disasters ever recorded hit the coastal countires of the Indian Sea. An earthquake with a 9.1-9.3 magnitude happened offshore and triggered a huge tsunami that affected 14 countries and killed nearly 230,000 people. The earthquake was the third largest ever recorded, and longest. It lasted between 8.3 and 10 minutes.
