Pepe began as an innocent character in the 2005 comic strip “Boy’s Night” and became a pretty passive Internet meme in the late 2000’s. Eventually he was associated with the 2016 presidential election after being co-opted by the alt-right movement. The artist, Matt Furie, described the hateful appropriation of Pepe as “his wort nightmare.” Sorry, Pepe. 🙁
