Outside of their assignments, the prisoners had to also dig out of their cells and unscrew bolts on the vents. They made picks and wrenches out of everyday items they managed to steal, such as spoons from the cafeteria and wood from the workshop. Every day from 5:30 PM until 9 PM they would work at chipping away holes large enough to crawl through.
