Frederick Valentich was a 20-year-old pilot at the time of his disappearance. Valentich grew up in Australia in the 1960s. He had always dreamed of becoming a pilot, but his family's financial status held him back from achieving that goal until he was old enough to make his own money.
Still, the Australian government denied Valentich twice due to his lack of formal education. However, he eventually proved to the authorities that he was an adequate pilot and he began attending the Melbourne Flight School to get his license.

The station that was at the shore watching Frederick Valentich fly could see his plane, but could not identify any other aircraft around him.
Valentich reported an aircraft with roving green lights, a landing surface, and an advanced propulsion system. He reported all of this in real-time while he was flying. His last words were "that's not an aircraft" and then there was metallic screeching reminiscent of a plane crashing onto land, even though he was over water.
When the Australian airforce went to go retrieve any remnants from the crash, they were unable to find any evidence Valentich's plane at all.
