The Shocking Truth Behind Comedy Icon Don Knotts

Don and Danny

Before Don Knotts became a permanent addition to The Andy Griffith Show, he aspired to become a ventriloquist. Knotts even pursued it as his full-time career after leaving high school. He named the doll Danny for his act “Don and Danny.”

Military Service

Knotts was only 19 when he enlisted in the United States Army after his freshman year of college. He served in the reserves for a week before reporting for active duty. Knotts served in the Army for three years, but he spent most of his time entertaining the troops. He toured the western Pacific Islands as part of a G.I. comedy show called “Stars and Gripes.”
