Since it was such a hassle and particularly dangerous excursion to leave the town, it was very rare for a local to meet someone who wasn’t also a local to Hazard. Because of that, they were led to intermarriage. Nowadays, this would be very unheard of, but back then, it was as if anything went! It only made sense to them to marry each other, and they probably didn’t really care about the fact that they could have been closely related.
