Harold Russell Sold His Oscar

In 1950, the Academy ruled that nobody was allowed to sell their Oscar statue “without first offering to sell it to the Academy for the sum of $1.” Because Russell had won the award in 1947, the rules didn’t apply to him. Despite objection from the president of the Academy, he sold it at an auction in 1993 for $60,500 to help pay for his wife’s medical bills.
