John Huston’s Dark Origin Story

Director John Huston, director of The African Queen and The Maltese Falcon, had a reputation as a partying womanizer. Prior to his directorial debut, Huston was trying to make it in Hollywood as a screenwriter when he struck and killed dancer Tosca Roulien with his car. Although Huston wasn’t found guilty, he was traumatized by the incident, drifting through Europe for five years until he returned to Hollywood 1937.
