Poitier opted to forgo his usual salary in exchange for a percentage of the film’s profits so that it could be made. Ultimately, Poitier’s sacrifice earned him an Academy Award for Best Actor. He was the second black person ever to win an Oscar, the first being Hattie McDaniel for Gone With the Wind.
