In 1898, heroin was used as an elixir to treat serious coughs, and you could get it at $4.85 an ounce, which is a steal considering today’s illegal market value price. By 1914, there were approximately 200,000 New Yorkers hooked on heroin, because they came in with a cough and ended up wanting more.
