California Hospital Finds Creative Way to Ease Children’s Stress Before Surgery

A California hospital is onto something when it comes to soothing children who are headed into surgery.

Doctors Medical Center in Modesto came up with a creative way to make children a little less anxious about a forthcoming operation. Instead of being wheeled into the operating room on a gurney, DMC lets youngsters drive right on in on toy mini-cars.

Patients have the option of driving either a black Mercedes or a pink Volkswagen Beetle.

So far, the cars have been a major hit with the children. Doctors and nurses have said that they’ve been quite successful at relieving pre-surgery stress.

“When they find out they can go into the operating room riding in a cool little car, they light up and in most cases, their fears melt away,” hospital spokeswoman Krista Deans.

“It can be traumatizing for a young patient to be peeled away from their parents as they head into surgery,” added Deans. “[But] this truly helps everyone involved.”
