Though he escaped persecution, he knew he was now considered a target. He chose to leave Germany and flee to Great Britain. He was a naturalized citizen by 1939 and went on to star in a collection of English films like The Thief of Bagdad. His character even inspired the character of Jafar from Aladdin!
