The team soon unearthed valuable elephant tusks. They were referred to as “white gold” back in the sixteenth century, as it was just as valuable! These tusks would be carved into intricate ornaments for the highest buyer. It’s now believed that these were going to be sold to wealthy people for a huge profit. Many of these tusks were as tall as the excavators, ringing it at a stunning six feet long! Afro-Portugese trading was at its peak 500 years ago, so this was presumably a huge sale for these sailors.
