Prankster Put Googly Eyes On Revolutionary War Monument

On the morning of October 11th, 2018, the city of Savannah woke up to the news that a historic monument of their Revolutionary War past had been vandalized… Via googly eyes.

Who did this?! Someone placed googly eyes on our historic #NathanaelGreene statue in #JohnsonSquare. It may look funny…

The Googly Eyes Bandit is now on the loose with absolutely no leads. Obviously, many people find this very, very funny. Many citizens are even calling for copy-cat bandits to cover their city in the hilarious stick-on eyes.

One Facebook user commented, “So I’m not a part of this community or anything, but you guys do realize you just dared your entire city to googly eyes all of your monuments right? Just pick the eyes off and move on.”

For some background as to why city officials are so upset, Nathanael Greene was one of George Washington’s advisors and ended up moving his family to Mulberry Grove Plantation in 1783. He then died there in 1786 of heatstroke. Due to his duty throughout the entire Revolutionary War (he and Washington were the only two men to serve the whole war) and his close ties with the city, they erected this monument in 1830.

It is a huge part of America’s history, but who can’t laugh at these googly eyes? He’d probably think it was funny!
