Who Was Sally?
We know she was a slave, but she was a person too! Everyone wanted to know more about her, but since she was a slave, very few records were kept. Luckily, enslaved blacksmith Isaac Granger Jefferson wrote about her in his journals. It is one of the only existing descriptions of her, as there were no portraits done of her when she was alive. He writes that she was, “mighty near white… very handsome, long straight hair down her back.” Since she was biracial, this checks out to be accurate!
