In 1802, one of Thomas Jeffersons opponents published a report about the unfit relationship between the President and his slave. This was just a year after he began his Presidency, which many believe was calculated in order to shame his reign. Jefferson was never listed as the father of her children and didn’t speak of them in his “Farm Book,” and his family continued to deny his involvement with the children. Hemings children that survived into adulthood were let go by Jefferson, which then fueled more rumors of his relationship to them.
