‘American’ Falls as Top Cheese in the U.S.

Hot off the press, ‘American’ is no longer the head cheese in the United States. That’s right, the ever-loved cheddar cheese is now old news, along with other American-style cheeses, like Colby and Monterey Jack. Which cheese now claims the coveted top spot?

Now topping the USDA’s list of most produced cheese are Italian-style cheeses. Their report said that 5.3 billion pounds of Italian cheeses were produced in the U.S. within the last year, as compared with the 5.1 billion pounds of American-style that had been produced.

Topping the Italian cheese sector was, obviously, mozzarella, followed by ricotta, provolone, and parmesan.

The full list of the top 10 most popular kinds of cheese in terms of production, categorized by the USDA is as follows:

  1. Italian
  2. American
  3. Processed Cheese
  4. Neufchâtel and Cream Cheese
  5. Cottage Cheese
  6. Swiss
  7. Hispanic
  8. Meunster
  9. Feta
  10. Bleu and Gorgonzola

Moral of the story, folks: Americans sure do love their pizza.
