Raunigk did not have a partner, and she had just entered menopause, so she needed donor eggs and donor sperm to be able to have children. But it is illegal in Germany to undergo artificial insemination with both a donor egg and sperm. So Raunigk had to travel to another country to seek help. She eventually ended up at the Ukraine to find a doctor that would help her through the procedure.
