The Live Action Pokémon Movie is Creeping Everyone Out

The trailer for Detective Pikachu is out, and it’s…well, see for yourself.

The movie, based on the Pokémon video game, is about Pikachu teaming up with the only human who can understand him. The kicker? Pikachu is voiced by Ryan Reynolds. I literally don’t even know what else to say. Why did they have to give him a deep male voice? Why? What did we do to deserve this?

That’s not even the worst part. The movie is also filled with realistic-looking CGI creatures.

I don’t know who asked for this, but I just want to talk. Please. We can sit down and have a conversation like adults.

Jigglypuff has become the stuff of nightmares. People are attributing the freaky iterations of these beloved animated characters to the “uncanny valley” phenomenon, which is the discomfort people feel when they experience androids exhibiting humanoid characters that are, like…just not quite convincingly realistic enough. And let me tell you, the Pokémon movie lives in the uncanny valley.
